RC MODEL MICRO TURBOJET ENGINE IN INDIA
A gas turbine engine is a machine that converts energy rich liquid fuel in to a powerful pushing force called thrust. When I started my research on model jet engines also known as RC-micro jet engine, because fascinated by gas turbine engines. I really impressed by their small size and cost.
The model gas turbine
engine is not as complex as axial flow compressor turbine engines, instead a simple centrifugal compressor design and working principle. They works
on same principle as the modern airplane or fighter jet gas turbine engines. Generally
producing a thrust by combustion of a
fuel in combustion chamber, produces high pressure and high velocity expanding
gases, resulting in thrust. ` The model gas turbine engine has only one
moving part (rotating part) – the main rotating shaft, rotates about an 80,000
to 1, 20,000 rpm, maximum speed. Generally the maximum rpm of the jet engine
depends on the size of the turbine wheel, as the size of turbine wheel
decreases, the max rpm of the shaft or engine increases. Vice versa as the size
of the turbine wheel increases, the max rpm of shaft or engine decreases. For
example if the jet engine having a turbine wheel of 54mm has a maximum rpm of 1,
20,000. And a jet engine having a turbine wheel of 84mm the maximum rpm ranges
between 60,000 to 80,000. The main rotating shaft connects the compressor wheel
at front of the engine to the turbine wheel at the back together.
It
uses a billet or cast aluminum high precision centrifugal compressor, like uses
in an automotive turbochargers. Compressor is well balanced by high precision
balancing machines to withstand about 1, 00,000 RPM. At this speed slightly imbalance
can produce catastrophic event. It increases the pressure of the air and its temperature. The rear turbine wheel of the jet engine is cast from inconel 713 or
inconel 718, the same expensive, exotic nickel-chromium alloy that is used in a
many full sized turbine engines. Inconel 718 offers outstanding resistance to
heat, oxidation and thermal fatigue up to temperature of 1000 degree Celsius. The exhaust gas temperature can reach up to
750 – 850 degree Celsius. Turbine disk has a many blades which produces
tangential force which rotates the turbine. In
the combustion chamber fuel is mixed with air to produce the bang, which is
responsible for the expansion , that forces the air in to the turbines the
combustion chamber has a difficult task of burning large quantities of fuel
with extensive volume of air. One of the most important part of the gas turbine engine is nozzle guide
vanes- increases the velocity of the exhaust gaseous. The gaseous expand
through the exhaust nozzle producing a high velocity jet. In a convergent nozzle,
the ducting narrows progressively to a throat the nozzle pressure ratio on a
turbojet is high enough at higher setting to cause the nozzle to choke. This
section allows the gaseous to reach supersonic velocity within the divergent
section . Additional thrust is generated by the higher resulting exhaust
velocity.
In Indian market there was a huge gap in terms of availability of rc
model micro turbine engines for hobbyist and professional aero scale model sport, because of the high cost of the model gas turbine engines manufactured in out of India.
For instance now in India there are some Indian
manufacturers of micro gas turbine engines which is primarily use for unmanned aerial vehicles, missiles,
and drones. We now see some of the model gas turbine or RC micro or small
